Every laryngectomy patient has their own journey. No two experiences are the same. Some days are good, while others can be more challenging.
This month, we are proud to introduce Chris Harrison, one of our Atos Ambassadors, who shares his personal experience of living with a laryngectomy and adapting to life after cancer treatment.
Chris is a Paediatric Nurse who has dedicated his career to caring for others. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time in the garden with his partner, Neal, and making the most of everyday life. However, his own healthcare journey began in 2018 when he noticed subtle changes to his voice. As someone who loved singing, he found he could no longer reach certain notes, prompting him to seek medical advice.
Following several appointments and investigations, Chris was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer. Over the years, he underwent multiple procedures, followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. While there were periods of hope and recovery, his cancer eventually returned, leading to the difficult decision to undergo a total laryngectomy.
Cancer tried to take my voice away but actually I do have a voice and sometimes you need to speak out

In his video, Chris reflects on the challenges of his diagnosis, treatment and recovery, while also sharing the realities of everyday life with a laryngectomy. He talks openly about the importance of establishing a routine, finding the right support, and discovering solutions that help make daily activities easier.
An avid gardener, Chris also explains how he uses Provox Life Protect filters to help protect against pollen, dust and seasonal viruses, allowing him to continue enjoying one of his favourite hobbies with confidence.
Chris's story is a powerful reminder that, although every laryngectomy journey is unique, life after laryngectomy is possible. Through resilience, support and determination, people can continue doing the things they love and find new ways to thrive.
