Kevin's journey to recovery post-laryngectomy is a remarkable tale of resilience, and determination, with the support from his fantastic hospital clinicians and Atos Care Head and Neck Nurses.’
In March 2023 Kevin was referred to our Atos Care Nursing team as he suffered with severe anxiety and a series of post-surgery complications that left him unable to consume food for an extended period. However, these obstacles, did not deter Kevin's spirit, nor did they hinder his ability to embrace the necessary care and training with enthusiasm and efficiency.
Adapting to life after a laryngectomy is no small feat, it demands daily attention and meticulous care to manage. Kevin embraced these changes with an openness to learn and adapt, which proved to be a turning point in his recovery—especially once he could manage these tasks in the comfort of his own home. Despite the significant weight loss, he experienced pre- and post-surgery, and the daunting prospect of not being able to ride his beloved Harley Davidson motorbike again, he remained focused on his journey to get better.
The Atos Care Health and Neck Nurses understood the depth of Kevin's love for his motorbike and set a goal to get him well enough to ride again. This served as a powerful motivator, steering Kevin through the challenging aspects of his rehabilitation and helped him gain an increasingly positive outlook. The physical aspect of getting back on a motorcycle, particularly one as substantial as Kevin's, required him to regain a significant amount of fitness and strength. In May 2023, he had made substantial progress and managed short rides whilst tackling complications such as secretions and baseplate management. The nurse’s persistent efforts led them to find an effective combination of the Provox Life Standard Adhesive with silicone glue and the Protect HME, paired with a stoma protector or bandana for comfort and protection during long rides.
Kevin's journey is a testament to the remarkable feats individuals can achieve with the right mindset and support. His ability to return to his passion for motorbike riding, something that is so important to him, is a source of inspiration. His recovery is not just about the physical ability to ride a motorcycle; it's about reclaiming a part his identity and the joy it brings him, that seemed nearly lost.
